Santana set to make debut at third base

(GOODYEAR) – The Carlos Santana third base experiment begins Thursday afternoon.

Santana, 27, has already begun his transition from catcher to third base playing winter ball over the offseason in the Dominican Republic and going through drills early on during spring training; but Thursday’s Cactus League exhibition game marks the first time the slugger gets in-game work at the hot corner.

Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall are in a position battle for the third base job. Chisenhall played in Wednesday’s Cactus League opener at Goodyear Ballpark against the Reds. The Tribe fell in their first exhibition game 8-3.

Indians manager Terry Francona has made it clear he feels the club is better with Chisenhall on it, but Santana is going to get every opportunity to win the competition. The third base competition will indirectly impact some of the bench spots and players like Nyjer Morgan, Jeff Francoeur and Matt Treanor.

The Indians play the Reds for the second-straight day at Goodyear Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 3:05 pm ET.

Right-hander Justin Masterson will start for the Tribe.

Here is today’s lineup for the second Cactus League game:

1. Michael Bourn CF

2. Mike Aviles SS

3. Michael Brantley LF

4. Carlos Santana 3B

5. Jason Giambi DH 6

. David Murphy RF

7. Jesus Aguilar 1B

8. Matt Treanor C

9. Elliott Johnson 2B

Right-hander Justin Masterson will start for the Tribe. Other pitchers scheduled to appear for Cleveland include RHP Corey Kluber and RHP Carlos Carrasco.
