A closing mass for St. Peter Chanel

St. Peter Chanel Catholic High School is closing its doors for good this June. A large turnout is expected for a final celebration Mass today at 10am.

The Bedford Heights school was founded by Marist priests in 1957. The Cleveland Catholic Diocese blames declining enrollment, difficult finances, and a drop in the number of available priests.

Admissions director Tim Koenig says the Mass will be a bittersweet celebration, with alumni from joining students in saying goodbye.

Members of the community are also being allowed to tour the school, look through yearbooks, and visit with old friends.

Koenig tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that the Firebirds have had a history of academic and athletic success since the school was founded in 1957. He says the Diocese is helping Chanel teachers to relocate, and assisting the students in continuing their education.
