Akron's Haunted Schoolhouse and Labratory creator dies

(Akron,Oh.) When David Johns transformed the Thomastown Elementary School in Akron into the Haunted Schoolhouse in 1974, Halloween was never the same for generations of school children who wanted a little more fright in their Fright Night.

Things got scarier in 1981 when Johns transformed the neighboring four-story Guggenheim Airship Institute into the Haunted Labratory. Both spook houses offered a combined seven stories of terror.

Johns not only managed both haunted houses, his attention to detail had critics comparing his haunted houses to movie sets. The Haunted Schoolhouse and Labratory have also gained national recognition and earned several awards. Just this past year they earned the "National Treasure Award" from the OniHaunts 2012 tour, and this past week, HauntedHouseRatings.com ranked the Haunted Schoolhouse among the nation's best.

Johns was also a veteran, having served in the National Guard for six years.

Johns passed away on Friday morning after suffering a brief illness. He was 63-years-old. Calling hours will be Tuesday, May 28th from 4-8 at Redmon Funeral Home in Stow.
