Child drowns at Euclid YMCA

(Euclid) – Police are investigating the drowning of a 9-year-old boy at the Euclid YMCA.

Vice President of Marketing for the Greater Cleveland YMCA Rick Haase says it happened around 4:00PM Tuesday when about 26 kids were in the water.

Nine-year-old Lonnie Smith Jr. of Cleveland Heights was non-responsive when he was pulled from the water.  Lonnie was taken to the Euclid Hospital Emergency Room and then lifeflighted to MetroHealth Medical Center where he passed away Tuesday evening.

"Truly this is a tragedy and we extend our condolences and deepest sympathy to the family," says Haase.

Haase says Smith was from a day care center that rented the "Y" pool. Three lifeguards were on duty and all members of the "Y" staff are being provided with counseling.

Euclid Police have closed the pool during the investigation.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office says the death is listed as a probable drowning, but an autopsy has not yet been conducted.
