County agency helping Cleveland-area dads

(Cleveland) - On this Father's Day, some 44% of Cuyahoga County households are run by a single parent, usually a mom.

The Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative seeks to strengthen families by encouraging dads to play a more active role in nurturing and raising their children.

Director Al Grimes says the Initiative responds to escalating social concerns regarding "father absence" by providing dads with access to services designed to prepare them to better meet the emotional, psychological, and financial needs of their children.

He tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, they also seek to increase public awareness about the importance of father involvement.

Grimes says his agency receives about 2,000 calls a year from fathers seeking help with a variety of issues, from finding jobs to support their families, to dealing with custody and child support.

He says, research has conclusively shown that children with involved and loving fathers are much more likely to be financially and emotionally secure, and less likely to become involved with crime and drugs.
