U of A officer involved in fatal shooting

(Akron) - The University of Akron Police and Akron Police are investigating a shooting during a traffic stop which occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Wolf Ledges Parkway, south of Thornton St.

When the UAPD officer approached the vehicle, the driver produced a handgun and the officer fired. The individual in the vehicle is identified as James Genda, a 64 year-old male from Baird Street in Akron.

Investigators say the weapon was a BB gun that lookedly exactly like a .45 caliber pistol.

Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards says the investigation will be conducted by the University of Akron Police, with the help of his department.

Edwards contends, the UAPD officer had to make a quick decision when the handgun was produced.

He tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, the vehicle was stopped because of improper registration. After checking the suspect's drivers license, the officer returned to the car a second time, and that's when the handgun was produced.

UA spokeswoman Laura Massie says the officer is no longer on the scene. He will be placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
