Cleveland a finalist to hold 11 NCAA Championships

(Cleveland) -- In the next few years, you may be calling Cleveland the "City of Champions." It's not because the Indians, Browns or Cavaliers have won a championship, it's because Cleveland has an excellent chance to host as many as 11 NCAA National Championship events from 2014-2018.

The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission says Cleveland has been named a finalist to host 11 NCAA National Championship events in the next few years. The hosts of the events will be named on December 11.

“We are extremely excited to be named a finalist to host 11 NCAA National Championship events for this championship cycle (2014 - 2018),” Greater Cleveland Sports Commission President and CEO David Gilbert said. “NCAA championship events provide a huge boost to our economy and allow thousands upon thousands of people from all over the country to experience our great city. Being named a finalist for these events is a huge step in securing a robust list of great future sporting events to be held here in Cleveland.”

Among the championship events that Cleveland may be hosting are: Division I Wrestling, Division II Men’s & Women’s Winter Sports Festival, Division II Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field, Division II Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field, Division II Men’s & Women’s Swimming & Diving, Division III Baseball, Division III Field Hockey, Division III Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field, Division III Softball, Division III Wrestling, and National Collegiate Fencing. Cleveland is in the running to host these championships in a number of years between 2014 and 2018.

The Division I Wrestling National Championships would be held at Quicken Loans Arena and would create an estimated $15 million of economic activity.
