(Cleveland) - As tax season begins, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald kicked off the “Fighting Tax Predators” initiative to raise awareness about tax scams and to highlight County resources available to residents who believe they may be targeted.
The county has launched a new website at www.cuyahogacounty.us/spottaxscams to provide information about the latest tax scams, and to provide ways taxyapers can protect themselves.
FitzGerald tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, that during tax return time a lot of money changes hands, and scammers are out in force not only seeking to steal cash, but also indentities and personal information.
The former FBI agent says common scams include, phoney companies that promise instant tax relief and promise huge savings but ask for big upfront fees. Bogus tax preparers that steal personal information, and tax prep services that promise large refunds but ask for a percentage of the proceeds.
FitzGerald says don't respond to emails or text messages claiming to be from the IRS, he says the agency never contacts people in that way.
