Ice fishing is hot!

(Put-In-Bay) — The frigid weather across northern Ohio has been good for ice fishing on Lake Erie.

David Hoheisel of IceFishOhio.com says the sport is gaining popularity with the frozen conditions on Lake Erie.

He tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that even in double digit below zero temperatures you will find enthusiasts on the lake trying to catch walleye.

Hoheisel says it’s a great sport, but you have to know what you are doing in order to be safe. He maintains first timers should never go out alone, and experts should always have the right gear.

But ice fishing has also been a problem for a big dock reconstruction project on South Bass Island.

Plans to break up the ice between the island and the mainland so that a barge could bring supplies for the project had to be put on hold.

The reason was that there were too many people out ice fishing on the lake. Officials decided that it would be too risky to break up the ice.

The company in charge of the docks project at Put-In-Bay docks says they're now looking at other ways to get the construction supplies to the island.

The nearly $6 million project will replace many of the public docks at Put-In-Bay.
