Leaders launch sin tax renewal campaign

(Cleveland) - Cleveland civic and business leaders gathered Tuesday to launch a campaign to approve the renewal of the county's tax on cigarettes and alcohol.

Revenue collected from the continuance of the sin tax would help fund maintenence and major repairs to the city's three publicly owned sports facilities:  FirstEnergy Stadium, Quicken Loans Arena and Progressive Field.

Leaders say the renewal of the sin tax would preserve the facilities.  Leaders are quick to point out that this is not an additional tax.

As it stands, consumers pay a two cent tax on a bottle of beer, 1.5 cents on a glass of wine and 4.5 cents on a pack of cigarettes.
