Vermilion-area grandmother headed to prison

(Sandusky) — The grandmother of a malnourished 18-month-old boy who died has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to child endangerment.

Debra Nelson was a home care nurse for the boy and some of his siblings near Vermilion. The 62-year-old Nelson earlier pleaded guilty to endangerment and failing to provide for a functionally impaired person.

The Sandusky Register reports Nelson told the court she did her best but knew her actions were wrong.

Nelson's lawyer has said some of the children had physical disabilities and medical problems that overwhelmed the family.

Isaac Brothers-Bartholomew died of malnutrition at home last November. The other children were removed, and four were treated for malnutrition.

Their parents also pleaded guilty to child endangerment.
